increasing the depth scale will also widen the grooves in the texture.
Wondering, Are you using the colored texture to make a bump map?
The best way, is to use photoshop to create a black and white verions of the texture, then paint along the grooves with black to create crisp sharp lines in your bumpmap. (makes the model not look like it was carved out of clay).
I know your not a texture artist, but ive faith in you.

I messed about a bit last night with a few UGTO ships and, overall, while I'm glad you've managed to put it into the game, it felt a tad too strong, especially in lower lighting.
Those ICC dread pics you put up seem a lot more subtle with the bumping, which works better.

Actually the simplest way to get a bump map would be to
1. Desaturate the texture (removing all colors)
2. Adjust the levels
3. Run it through the high pass filter to "soften" the depth of bumps.

I approve of the new icc ships... the old dred looks beautiful... the texture makes it look more real.

First you see the UGTO ships, are you are like "Whoh... thats pretty awesome".
And then you see ICC ships and you are like "Damn, thats subtle but accurate."
And then you see K'luth ships and all your mind says is NAILED IT NAILED IT NAILED IT.
